TREE PROJECT: ANDREW LAMB & MISUN WON

ANDREW LAMB

Andrew Lamb graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2000 and completed his masters at The Royal College of Art, London in 2004. He balances his time between his jewellery practice and lecturing at The Glasgow School of Art, where he is a Reader in Jewellery.  Andrew, an Honorary Member of The World Crafts Council Europe, has received multiple awards for his work. Including prizes for technological innovation in the Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Council Awards, London and the prestigious Arts Foundation Fellowship Award for Jewellery in 2010. Work has been acquired for collections including the Crafts Council, The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths’, Aberdeen Museum & Art Gallery and The Victoria & Albert Museum.

“My research interests are underpinned by traditional goldsmithing practices and I am compelled to advance what is possible both in aesthetic form through wearable objects also preserving technical mastery through a rigorous exploration into the properties of wire. I experiment with multiple precious alloys of gold and titanium. Influences include digital graphics, textiles and the virtual world and I reference visual illusion and optical principles in jewellery to echo the perfection found in nature tempered by the shifting patterns of how we see and perceive the world.”

‘My first memories of Dorothy’s work are her ‘Spirit Level’ brooches and her stunning ‘Bangle with 100 Rings’ which she once brought in for a handling session. I have always loved the movement and tactility within these pieces, which emphasised to students the importance of the wearer, as it is when worn that her pieces really come alive.  I was continually amazed at how Dorothy managed her time as a world class jeweller as well as leading and teaching on the successful programme at ECA, being a member on various committees, as well as a lecturer, curator, and mentor.  Recently someone asked me how I measured my own success.  It is true to say that what is often forefront in my mind is ‘what would Dot think and would she be proud’.  That is something which truly drives me.  I deeply miss her and only hope she knew how grateful I was, and still am, for everything she did to inspire me.’
