The Incorporation of Goldsmiths of the City of Edinburgh has a history going back over 550 years and was Incorporated under Royal Charter in 1687.

Today it is the oldest consumer protection group in Scotland, and it is believed to be the oldest continuously existing business of any kind in the country. The Incorporation of Goldsmiths is one of the 15 Incorporated Trades of Edinburgh.

The Incorporation of Goldsmiths of the City of Edinburgh is governed by the Court of Wardens under the Chairmanship of the Deacon, and the Court is supported by eleven Incorporation Members.

The Incorporation of Goldsmiths trades as Edinburgh Assay Office. Items of gold, silver, platinum and palladium are tested and hallmarked with the famous Edinburgh Castle hallmark.

Deacon
Tom Murray WS

Tom Murray is the founder of Charityflow, a philanthropy advisory company. He is a trustee of Mercy Corps and the Scottish National War Memorial, and the protector the the BIG Lottery Jessica Trust. Tom was previously a solicitor private practice specialising in trust and charity work. He is also Purse Bearer to the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Prior to becoming Deacon of the Incorporation he was chairman of the British Hallmarking Council.

John Sitrling WS

John Stirling is a solicitor – advocate. He has an active interest in both historic and contemporary silver and jewellery. He has wide experience of both the commercial and not for profit sectors.

Jock Encombe

Jock Encombe is an organisational psychologist with over 25 years' experience in the public, private and charity sectors.  He has a particular interest in helping individuals and organisations understand and overcome the barriers that are preventing them from achieving their full potential.

 

Joanne Lim

Joanne Lim is an economist by training and is currently Group Senior Director of Global Trade & Logistics at Tiffany & Company. Her career spans government, consultancy and corporations across three continents. She firmly believes that businesses can be a force for good with well-designed policies, and this has motivated Joanne to join the Incorporation as a Warden.

Ken Lewandowski

Ken Lewandowski is a former local Chairman of Clydesdale Bank Financial Solutions Centres in Edinburgh and Glasgow. He has been Chairman of many technology and manufacturing businesses, and has been a Warden of the Incorporation of Goldsmiths of the City of Edinburgh for over 15 years. He also serves on the board of a number of charitable organisations including Scotland’s National Children’s Charity, Children 1st.

Leah Black

Leah Black is Chief Executive of WHALE Arts a community-led charity and social enterprise in Wester Hailes, Edinburgh. Previously she worked in the Creative Industries Team at Creative Scotland and as Director of Upland CIC in Dumfries and Galloway. She has a background as a jeweller and silversmith.

George Dalgleish

George Dalgleish is a museum curator, with a lifelong passion for Scottish history and material culture. A graduate of Edinburgh University, he retired as Keeper of the Scottish History and Archaeology Department of National Museums Scotland in 2016, after a 37-year career there. He maintains an active involvement in many aspects of Scotland’s heritage, including as a Trustee of the Abbotsford Trust, and being one of the longest serving members of the Incorporation of Goldsmiths of Edinburgh.

John Andrew

John Andrew is curator of The Pearson Silver Collection which is devoted to post 1945 and contemporary British Designer silver. It is considered to be of national importance. He writes on the subject in the UK, USA and Canada. The UK press has called him an ‘evangelist for modern British silver’,

Tom Burnet

Tom Burnet sits on the Board of a number of public and private companies having spent most of his executive career working in international technology businesses.

Colin Fraser

Colin Fraser is a silver consultant specialist, with world renown for his focus on Scottish Silver & Accessories. Colin works closely with private collectors and institutions on the acquisition of Scottish silver, emphasising the value and importance of hallmarking. As a member of the Incorporation and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, Colin is passionate about the rich and vibrant history of Scottish silver.

 

Philip Carry

Philip Carry is a partner in Jamieson & Carry, an independent family jeweller in Aberdeen. Philip has an accountancy background and specialises in the finance and marketing areas within the business. Philip has a passion for Scottish silversmithing and jewellery.

Ross Laurie

Ross Laurie is a technology entrepreneur and currently CEO of Visible Capital, a Financial Services Software company. He was impressed by the supply chain improvements the Assay Master introduced in the year 2010 and is eager to help the Incorporation use technology to improve efficiency of operations and develop world-class provenance capabilities around ethical making.
