Elements returns to Lyon & Turnbull in Edinburgh for its ninth year in 2023, bringing together the UK's finest Jewellers and Silversmiths. From functional and sculptural silver to colourful, one-of-a-kind jewellery, Elements celebrates the vast range of expert craftsmanship and innovative design of makers from across the UK. We are pleased to announce a range of events to be held during the Elements weekend, from gemstone masterclasses to copper embossing workshops. Gemstone Masterclass with Ruth Davis, FGA DGA PjDip

Join Ruth Davis (FGA DGA PjDip) Head of Jewellery & Silver, Scotland, at Lyon & Turnbull for a colourful gemstone masterclass and discover more about the science of gemmology and coloured gemstones.

Gemmologist Ruth Davis will lead you through her masterclass in gemmology and jewellery to discover more about emeralds, sapphires and rubies, use a jeweller’s loupe, and see how some useful tricks of the trade can help you identify a range of stones in seconds.

 
 

Perspex & Silver Pendant Workshop

Join Jeweller and Elements 2023 Exhibitor Barbara Spence for a Perspex and silver pendant workshop.

The aim of this workshop is for you to create a unique silver and Perspex pendant on a silver chain. During the workshop you will design a pendant using a brightly coloured Perspex base and a choice of pre cut silver shapes. Barbara will demonstrate various riveting techniques which you will use to attach the silver shapes to the base.

 
 

Diamond Masterclass with Ruth Davis, FGA DGA PjDip

Join Ruth Davis (FGA DGA PjDip) Head of Jewellery & Silver, Scotland, at Lyon & Turnbull for a sparkling diamond masterclass and discover more about the science of gemmology and diamonds.

Gemmologist Ruth Davis will lead you through her masterclass in gemmology and jewellery, teaching you how to decode a diamond certificate, use a jeweller’s loupe, and see how some useful tricks of the trade to help you identify a diamond in seconds.

 
 

Woven Fortune Brooch Workshop

Join Silversmith and Elements 2023 Exhibitor Caitlin Murphy for a workshop where everyone can make their own coloured paper fortune brooch.

Participants will mark, colour and cut strips of paper, and will learn to weave the colourful strips together to form a woven square. There are instructions to fold this into a simple origami fortune teller. Using the safety pin, each participant can attach this to their clothes, giving them a positive and colourful fortune brooch. This workshop is suitable for all ages.

 
 

Embossed Copper Initial Workshop

Sunday October 29 2023 from 11:00AM-12:30PM

Join Silversmith and Elements 2023 Exhibitor Bryony Knox for a workshop where you will design and make a copper shim tile. This is an ideal way for beginners to explore the malleability of this colourful metal, whilst making a unique design of their initial letter.

Participants will use stylus and doming punches to push and form the copper shim, using a soft mousemat and hard surface of a table. No hammers or saws needed. The copper will then be folded around wooden tiles and finished off. This workshop is appropriate for ages 12 and up.

 

Elements is a partnership project between Lyon & Turnbull Auctioneers and The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust.

The Main Level of Lyon & Turnbull is accessible via the temporary ramp at the front stairs. Lyon & Turnbull is a Grade-A listed building, and the building does not allow for elevators, so the upstairs gallery and downstairs toilets are not wheelchair accessible. Lyon & Turnbull do not have disabled toilets.
