Outstanding Student Award

The Outstanding Student Award gives students in Scotland the opportunity to experience working to commission, designing and making a goblet for the collection of The Incorporation of Goldsmiths. Each college is asked to submit a winning design for a silver goblet, and the winner is then paired with an established silversmith to create the goblet. This award is generously supported by The Incorporation of Goldsmiths of the City of Edinburgh. The aim of this award is to promote the continuing development of a rich and diverse silversmithing heritage in Scotland today, and to support emerging makers.

The selected student will also have the experience of working with one of Scotland’s prominent and highly regarded silversmiths in their workshop, providing them with technical assistance and guidance with the making of the goblet. This opportunity enables the student to develop their design and making skills, building their confidence in tackling high profile commissions.

“I believe this project is a very useful engagement with a professional craftsman in the latter years of a student’s full time study. This experience offered by the Incorporation is invaluable to a student’s early development specialising in silversmithing.”

John Creed, Master Goldsmith, mentored Hamish Dobbie in 2012 Outstanding Student Award

“I would like to thank you so much for having given me the opportunity to work on a commission such as this and to have the honour of being in the Incorporation’s collection now! The making of the piece has taught me so much and has really helped me with my final year’s study.”

Hamish Dobbie, Winner of 2012 Outstanding Student Award
